The Infantree is excited this month to host local photographer Tom Debic and his exhibit The Kruger Deception.

The Kruger Deception is a series of black and white photographs of wild animals in their natural habitat. Taken in natural history museums using a toy camera, the photographs have an “old world” feel, making the viewer wonder whether or not they are real. The charm is in the deception, whether the photographer is deceiving the viewer or the animals themselves are tapping into long-forgotten childhood imagination.

“Resisting the seduction of digital capture, I used film for this series. Film separates me from the instant gratification of digital. It allows me to take a step back and let time and memory detach me from the moment of pressing the shutter. I also used cheap toy cameras which are of questionable quality and force me to experiment.”

To see more of Tom’s work visit http://tomdebiec.com/

The opening will be this Friday, November 4 from 6-9 PM and runs through the end of the month at the Infantree, located at 21 North Prince Street.

The Infantree is proud to welcome Mathew Samuel for First Friday, October 7th. We’ll be opening our doors at 5:00. Mathew is an Assistant Professor at Lebanon Valley College in the Digital Communications program. He also runs a small design studio called San 7 Studios producing a variety of projects ranging from graphic design to web design and a product line called Masala.

Mathew is just a generally good dude and we’re very happy to finally get his work in our space. Drop by and show your face!

Mathew’s artwork has primarily focused on his Indian culture, cross cultural contradictions, and more recently a free flowing line series that is done as a subconscious response to daily life.

We have had the pleasure of getting to know Keith over the last couple of years as he has been part of several group shows here at The Infantree. This Friday (Sept. 2nd) will be Keith’s first solo show entitled Extreme Radio-Controlled Thuggery. We’ll be open First Friday from 5-9 pm.

Extreme Radio-Controlled Thuggery” is a look into the secret lives of the most hardcore R/C car enthusiasts. From the beaches of Cebu Philippines, to the rural suburbs of Dallas, Pennsylvania, down to the scabrous blocks of South Philly, these ‘hobbyists’ are modern day heroes within the confines of their own subculture. But their love and dedication to their sport is not always all peaches and cream… there’s politics, man, and lots of it. Amongst their competitiveness, there is an equal amount of lies, gossip, deception — even physical harm and occasional stabbings. Some hobbyists choose escape routes in order to avoid these hardships. A few choose to write their R/C handle on walls, just to get their name out there and prove themselves to be above all of the day to day drama, only to find themselves in even more mishaps. Others are fortunate and find music or skateboarding as their only means to escape the agitations of inner-circle drama. Some find love. Others aren’t so lucky and find themselves every night at the bottom of a bottle of cheap liquor, or they turn towards more frowned-upon, illegal substances. Whatever path is created, the hobbyist, at the end of the day, dreams of that which first inspired the core of their facinations: Fun. Freedom. Self-Control. It might not all be as easily within reach to them at this point in their lives, but oh do they long for it.

Hello friends! We’re super excited to announce that our new web site launched today in tandem with our brand identity refresh. Our new mark combines a lot of things we like about our name and the wonderful Keystone State we call home. Best of all, we got our new letterpress cards this week. A big thank you goes to Scott McClelland, a printer and designer working in Philadelphia. We wish you the best Scott, thanks for your hard work on this one.

For those who care, the cards are printed on French Muscletone black, with silver ink and a black deboss of the logo. We duplexed two sheets of 140 lb. cover to get the final weight. The sides are painted in silver as well. A truly beautiful job for two nerdy lovers of print!

What many people don’t know about us here at The Infantree is that we’re rather large boardgame dorks, and we’re not just talking about an occasional monotonous game of Monopoly or even Risk. We’re talking about games of actual strategy!

Starting with games like Settlers of Catan, Memoir ’44 and Puerto Rico, we’ve spent hours discovering “games beyond Monopoly”. We’re still to this day not sure what the initial draw was. Perhaps it was the amazing artwork or the complex strategy. However, as the years have gone by and our game collections have grown, we have found few things more satisfying than a lunch hour spent immersed in a game.

Early this year, one of our favorite game companies, Days of Wonder, put out a call-for-entry for a new map design for one of their flagship games, Ticket to Ride. We were stoked and knew we had to get involved. Map designs were sent in from over 600 individuals in 40 countries. Although we didn’t end up winning the contest, our map was selected as a finalist and play-tested by the game designers, which we were pretty excited about.

Below are a few pictures from our endeavor (yes, we created that board and all the artwork). We hope you enjoy them. We also hope that you’ll check back with us about our own game designs. We have a few ideas in the works that aren’t dependent on someone else choosing our map. More on that to come later!
